At GMC Gismarvik Base, 15 kilometers of solid mooring chain are ready for reuse. The chain comes from the Veslefrikk platform, which ended production in February of this year.

Recycling is environmental recovery

– The positive thing about reuse is that it saves energy as the mooring chain is put to good use elsewhere – instead of being remelted. At GMC Marine Partner, we sell both mooring equipment and other equipment for reuse, says Stein Roald Levang, Operations Manager at GMC Marine Partner.

The conversion of mooring equipment is one of many projects, and it is not the first time that GMC Marine Partner has purchased chain for reuse. The chain from Veslefrikk consists of dimensions of 76 mm, 82 mm and 120 mm. The 2,500 tons of chain now for sale is not regular inventory.

– Mooring chain of this size has several uses. In addition to its primary use, which is mooring large floating structures, it can also be used as ballast, for example. It can be sold or rented out, says Levang.

Collaboration with Stena Recycling

In Mekjarvik, Stena Recycling is the closest neighboring company to GMC's department, and the two companies have a long tradition of collaborative projects.

The 2,500-tonne chain was brought ashore by the vessel Normand Ferking, in three calls in early September. This was part of a larger operation carried out by DOF Subsea to retrieve the chain from the seabed and transport it to GMC Gismarvik Base, located in Haugaland Næringspark. Stena Recycling purchased the mooring chain from Equinor, and then entered into a partnership with GMC to bring it ashore, store it and process it for further use.

Logistics hub

Haugaland Næringspark is centrally located, close to efficient transport routes both by land and sea. The 160-acre area with port facilities and deep-water quay is operated by GMC Marine Partner.

Great interest

– We have now sold a batch of the chain. There is a one-year delivery time for chain of this size, and we are therefore experiencing great interest in it and other anchor chains that we have in stock, says Rune Christensen, Manager Products at GMC Marine Partner.

Now 1000 meters of the 15,655 meter long chain has been sold. This has been re-certified and is now ready to be used for anchoring vessels.
