New cooling solutions provide better energy consumption

By installing new refrigeration and air conditioning systems, you minimize the risk of F-gas emissions that can occur from leaks in the systems. In addition, you get a more energy-efficient system that saves you money on the project.

Kristian Gjertsen, Operations Manager at GMC HVAC AS, recommends installing new systems that are both better for the environment and more cost-effective in the long run.

– Large parts of the cooling systems on the Norwegian continental shelf can be improved. The systems installed previously were not designed with energy efficiency and the best possible use of resources in mind.
Kristian Gjertsen is operations manager at GMC HVAC. Together with the project managers in the department, Gjertsen develops solutions for customers in the energy sector.

Reduces environmental footprint

– For our customers, upgrading existing systems, or installing new systems, means both a reduction in the company's environmental footprint and significant savings in operating costs, says Gjertsen.

- The systems installed previously were not designed with energy efficiency and the best possible use of resources in mind.

Recommending current systems

– In addition to the fact that the older plants are not designed to be energy efficient, old systems pose a risk of greenhouse gas emissions in the event of leaks. Today's systems are designed and developed to deliver the most capacity possible with the lowest possible power consumption. The focus is on reusing the energy in the plant, says Gjertsen.
There are also opportunities for solutions that improve older systems.

Refrigeration technician Fredrik Solem is rebuilding and making the system more robust. Components are being replaced and existing equipment is being improved by changing the refrigerant to a more environmentally friendly gas.

– Older systems can be given a new lease of life through remodeling and robustness. In such cases, we focus on simple solutions that can contribute to reduced power consumption and more stable operation. Such a solution could, for example, be a new and more efficient refrigeration compressor with a frequency converter, or installing a frequency converter on a fan or a pump.

Adaptations that require minor modifications include switching to a more environmentally friendly refrigerant.

Kristian Gjertsen concludes:

– The older systems still have a much larger climate footprint. For customers with climate goals, installing new cooling systems is a simple adaptation with a big impact.

GMC HVAC's refrigeration department offers services such as service and maintenance, modification and installation of new systems.
