The future is electric - both on land and at sea
Freezing Tuesday. Warm workshop. At GMC Power & Automation, no two days are the same – they build switchboards and control panels for everything from ships to solar power plants. They are now looking for an electrical installer who thrives on ad hoc assignments, flexibility and Friday barbecues with good colleagues.
– Hey, I'm done with the meeting already – are you ready? Freezing Tuesday morning. Erik Pedersen comes out of the office premises of GMC Power & Automation on Buøy in Stavanger.

Pedersen leads the way to the electrical workshop. Inside, in the heat, two fitters are working on assembling a panel that will be on board a ship.
– We produce these for a customer so that they can expand the capacity of available electricity for containers and equipment on deck, explains Pedersen.
GMC is responsible for design, calculations and documentation. Erik Pedersen ensures that the workshop has a system in place. He is responsible for ensuring that the electricians have access to the right equipment and quality-assured the work that is carried out.

– Here it is important to have thought of most things and make sure that all the equipment is in place at the right time. The assignments we receive are often ad hoc – we are very flexible in that way, says Pedersen.
Recently they installed a solar cell system on a barge to power and control lanterns, a very exciting project.

Ships, rigs and offshore
– The projects are varied. The ships, rigs and offshore units we are on board often have different systems that we have to familiarize ourselves with and adapt the work accordingly.
Pedersen looks at the others and smiles.
– There have also been a couple of episodes where one of us has joined a sea voyage. Once we ended up in the Lysefjord – to name a local place – and had to ask the crew to dock in Forsand.

Barbecue at lunch every Friday
At lunchtime, the large gate to the hall is opened, and the grill is placed out front along with a self-carved side table.
– If you want food, you have to help yourself, it's hard to find it here, says Pedersen.
On Fridays, the employees of GMC Power & Automation gather in the electrical hall to barbecue.
– This has become a nice tradition where you can meet colleagues and have a chat. Unless you are at sea, traveling or offshore, says Kenneth Gjerstad, acting general manager.

Looking for an electrical installer
GMC has provided electrical services to ship services, oil services, rigs to quays, process plants and offshore installations for over 20 years.
– With great variation in the projects, the employees have an exciting and challenging everyday life. We have locations in Stavanger, Haugalandet and the Bergen area. There are great opportunities for development here, says Gjerstad.
