With a new base in close proximity to the Navy's main facility in Western Norway, GMC brings heavy maritime expertise close to where the need is greatest.

GMC opens a dedicated service base at Hilleren Navy Supply Park in direct proximity to Haakonsvern Naval Station.

With the base in place, the group brings together broad maritime expertise within marine service, power and automation, lifting equipment, HVAC and technical maintenance at one location, strategically located at the Navy's primary operating base in Western Norway.

Thomas A. Vang, CEO of GMC
"We have extensive experience with demanding maritime assignments for both civilian and military customers. With this base, we can offer the Navy what they need, when they need it — fast response, the right expertise and an industry partner they can trust," says Thomas A. Vang, CEO of GMC.

The establishment at Hilleren is a natural step in GMC's growth strategy and reflects the group's ambition to be the preferred industrial partner for the Norwegian Armed Forces along the Norwegian coast. Geographical proximity to Haakonsvern provides shorter response times, more flexible planning and closer collaboration, which over time strengthens the overall operational capacity.

Civil-military cooperation in maintenance and logistics is a priority area in the Norwegian Armed Forces' long-term plan, and GMC sees good opportunities to grow together with the Norwegian Armed Forces in the years to come. The group is now building capacity to take a central role in this work. At the same time, the base is being developed in a way that facilitates optimal interaction between civil and military activity.

The Norwegian Defence Research Institute (FFI) concluded in November 2025 that Norwegian industry does not have sufficient capacity and geographical proximity to meet the Navy's ongoing maintenance needs. The report points out that this poses a real risk to the operational availability of the vessels — in other words: ships that should have been available for operations are not.

"Norway invests in defense capability. We invest in the capacity that ensures that investment remains operational. It is a role we are proud to take on," says Vang.
