A new general manager started at GMC Yard on Friday, November 1. Arild Stølen comes from the role of VP Service at Optimarin AS, where he has been globally responsible for building up and running service on ballast water purification systems.

– My first job was at a shipyard in Egersund when I was 16 years old. I worked as a welder and sheet metal worker, and later received training in hydraulics.

After 10 years in hydraulics, Stølen started working in the supply industry, both offshore subsea and later topside. He worked extensively on a global basis, and is now looking forward to taking on the role of general manager at the GMC shipyard in Stavanger.

– I look forward to working with all the talented professionals at GMC Yard, and not least getting to know existing and new customers.
– We are excited to welcome Arild to the GMC leadership team, where he will also take the helm as head of our subsidiary, GMC Yard. Together with the rest of the group, we are ready to deliver even more value to our customers through innovative and sustainable solutions. With Arild on the team, we feel confident that GMC has much exciting to offer customers in the future, says Thomas A. Vang, CEO of GMC.

▶️ What opportunities do you see for the company going forward?
– Our greatest opportunity at the shipyard is to operate as one GMC. Our combined capacity and all the expertise and experience we have, strengthens us considerably and makes us unique in the market. The uniqueness of the company is not that we operate the docks or facilities we have, but our strong professionals who have enormous experience and have boats at their fingertips.

▶️ Where do you see the company in five years?
– In five years, GMC Yard AS will have many new customers and more products to offer our customers. New technology will be used in a purposeful and good way, where the focus is savings for the customer and the environment. This will ensure that we as a company gain a stronger position in the market and as a supplier for our customers.

▶️ How is the development in the shipbuilding industry?
– The development is relatively conservative, but it is quite clear that what is happening now related to green solutions for shipping will affect everyone in the future. It will force other demands on technology, facilities and knowledge among those who work with us. The consequence of not keeping up with the times is that we are lagging behind. We will be a contributor to keeping shipping going, and be part of the chain that is essential for Norway to be one of the world's largest exporters of oil and gas.

▶️ And finally, what do you do when you have time off?
– It goes hiking, wine and traveling. But not necessarily in that order. 🙂
