The largest ship in the Norwegian Navy's fleet is now docked at GMC Yard in Stavanger.

– It is fantastic to be on board KNM "Maud" again today. This contract demonstrates GMC's strategy. We will continue to use the group's combined expertise and capacity across GMC to take on larger assignments, says GMC CEO, Thomas A. Vang.

Together with the General Manager of GMC Yard, Per Ingolf Jøsang, and the board of GMC, he is today visiting the ship for a tour by Commander in the Navy, Thorvald Dahll.

– For us, it was a long process to find out where to dock. Now we are happy to have received this contract with GMC. There are not many shipyards that can accept vessels of this size because KNM “Maud” is a very deep ship, says Captain Commander on board KNM “Maud”, Thorvald Dahll.

The ship arrived at the GMC shipyard in Stavanger on November 15th and will continue to Haakonsvern in the New Year. The stay is part of the ship's five-year classification.
The commanding captain also has no doubt that there are advantages for the conscripts on board to being close to the city.

– That way, the conscripts get ashore and can lower their shoulders and breathe a little, and can experience Stavanger and what the city has to offer.
Maren Mork is the radio operator on board. The ship has a female proportion of about 25%. During the period when the ship is at the shipyard, Mork and the rest of the crew live on board.

KNM "Maud" has a tonnage that is almost six times larger than the frigates, or equivalent to the weight of 348 fully loaded Boeing 737s. The military logistics vessel can load up to 200 tons of ammunition, spare parts, 30 tons of provisions, boats, vehicles, and over 9 million liters of fuel for own and allied naval vessels.

Environmental considerations during classification

– We think about environmental considerations on board and take into account that we transport chemicals and other products. We operate under the Green Ship Notation, which means that we operate the ship in such a way that we pollute as little as possible, and are thus in a separate DNV class, says Dahll.

– Everything that takes place in the dock is under strict control and all emissions in connection with flushing and other services are sorted and treated so that nothing goes into the sea, says Jøsang.

– There is a lot of good learning here in developing maintenance programs and finding effective and sustainable solutions in close collaboration with the Armed Forces. GMC is a recognized player in maintenance and modifications. We are proud that the Armed Forces now choose GMC because we have a Consider it done attitude, says Vang.

From left: Eirik Fjone and Arturas Jankauskas are project managers at GMC Yard, and are working closely with the crew of KNM "Maud" to get the ship in top shape.

Vang has no doubt that the lessons learned from the project will be useful going forward:

– The Armed Forces naturally choose other solutions and dimensions than civilian vessels. This is something that GMC will build further expertise on. Our goal is clearly to offer our services to other Norwegian and allied military vessels in the future.
